Orlando relationship therapy and understanding what it means to be truly authentic. What does this word even mean? Is there one definition that can encompass such a word? Do you see yourself as someone that is authentic?

I am going to (for the sake of this article) state that a working definition for being authentic means to be without condition, tightness, false sense of self represented to another. It is pure and does not try to fit in or make others happy. Do you feel like you act as though your a character on stage wearing different hats?

The actual act of stating that something is authentic is to confirm it is not counterfeit. That it is genuine. We have experts in every field trained with a sharp eye to assess items, collectibles, important documents, to certify their authenticity. Do we have a method for ascertaining people and if they are authentic?

True Authenticity

Most people especially those in an early relationship are way to concerned about how the other person perceives them. They mask and disguise certain features of their personality to make sure that you like and approve of them. We are fearful of others shaming or calling us out on what they perceive as a character defect. When we worry about others opinions then we tend to manipulate our personalities to seek the approval of another or to avoid their disapproval. This is far from our true authentic self.

To be authentic requires the genuine sharing of ones inner self. It requires the ability to be aware and present in the moment and not concerned with how you will be looked at or viewed. We constantly battle our thoughts and find excuses for why we cannot do something. Our words and actions do not align and we are misrepresenting ourselves. How in the world can this be the foundation for a relationship or marriage?

Even more of a problem are the missed opportunities to have meaningful conversation that leads to understanding each other on a deeper more authentic level. The truth of who someone is will never be revealed. The relationship comes to a grid lock and is stuck. Depression and anxiety settles in. When a person struggles with their own unconscious idea of authenticity how in the world are they even going to know who they or another person is in a more “real” way? What is called often as a conflicted relationship is really the creation and manifestation of each individuals challenges they face in their own process of evolution.

Become More Authentic

Learning the art of communication is a delicate matter. It can open the path to creating a healthy evolving relationship. The commitment on an individual level to explore oneself must be done in order for authenticity to emerge.

An authentic individual can be very sensitive to what others may think about them. Spending your entire life people pleasing is a form of self-betrayal and is very destructive. Creating a sense of self esteem is key to stopping the inauthentic version of who you are. Acting out in anger or attempts to be controlling create more distance. We become defensive and feel attacked if we are still wrapped up in what others think. Fear is at the core of all anger.

If we can allow ourselves the chance to do the individual work and better understand what those roles are that we play we can then start to shift away from them. We move into a space of being more authentic. You partner, family, children, friends, etc all benefit from the true version of who you are.
