Counseling kids Orlando and does my kid need it? With so much going on in the lives of kids today it’s hard to tell right from left. They are living in such a fast paced society where kids all around them have been placed on some type of medication. You may feel pressured if your child acts out in class or does not act his appropriate age among his peers.

This is concerning to many parents simply because other adults have made it a point to tell you what you should and should not do with your child. You know your child best. Don’t be pressured by others. Maybe your kid is a late bloomer or is more on the shy side. Maybe your kid was frustrated in class one day and acted out. Are these behaviors now so alarming that we must call in a child psychologists and a team of counselors? Does the kid instantly without proper diagnosis get labeled ADHD or conduct disorder. Maybe we are so tight and ready to diagnose as a society that we are not letting kids be kids.

The thing about kids is that they naturally make mistakes. This is part of natural development. They test the boundaries to see how far they can go. It’s up to the adults to help set consistent parameters to keep them safe. Kids are naturally hyperactive and excited. Not many that I know volunteer to do their homework. We make them attend school seven hours a day with barely any physical exercise. Twenty minutes if your kid is lucky.

Of course as a therapist I am not against seeing a kid for child counseling. We just want to make sure that there are valid reasons why and we are not rushing the kid to therapy because the parents are nervous or someone else is telling you what you should do.

If your child is experiencing a sudden and drastic change that is noticeable then maybe it is time for counseling. Here are a few examples or reasons to consider counseling kids Orlando:

1.Your kid is having difficulty at both home and school.

He or she is struggling with their emotions and is talking back or behaving defiant across the board. This is something new that you see as a behavior. They are hitting siblings or classmates, not listening at all to authority figures.

2. You find your child suddenly isolating him or herself from others.

The child’s friendships are changing and the group of friends your child once hung out with has changed. Your child is withdrawing from hanging out in large peer groups and wants to be left alone. Statements such as “I am a loser, no one likes me”, start to show up.

3. You see your kid regressing.

The point to understand here is that children tend to regress when there is a major life event or life changer in their environment. This might be a divorce, a sudden death in the family, loss of a pet. the birth of a new child, or severe relationship problems between you and you spouse or husband/wife. Signs of regression would be bet wetting, whining and clinging behavior and tantrums. Even signs of bullying. If these behaviors last longer than a month than this may be a red flag and counseling kids Orlando is needed.

4. The kid shows signs of severe sadness and worry.

It is very normal for kids to worry from time to time and they all cry. This is simply just a part of normal childhood. All kids have worries at times and all kids get sad from time to time. That’s part of childhood. However if it is interfering with your kids normal ability to function during the day or go to school, this is when help may be needed.

5. The kids sleeping habits and the way they are eating changes suddenly.

If you find your kid having a hard time staying awake or falling asleep randomly, having nightmares these are signs of excessive emotional pressure on a child. Also if you find your child eating more than usual in large consumption’s or eating very little. If they complain of headaches and stomachaches also this is a sign they need further evaluation and help.

This should be a good overview of how to tell if your child needs counseling or not. Like I said earlier in this blog, be careful who you listen to as an “authority”. As a parent when I see children I ask that the parents to be involved in family counseling. Also individual or couples counseling. This helps me to work with the parents at the same time I am working with the child. You must understand that your child is constantly taking cues and signs from your behavior. If you as the parent are experiencing depression, anxiety or are having relationship problems, seeking counseling for yourself may be needed. You can help get your child back on track.
