Drug Abuse Counselor

Drug abuse counselor and what exactly is one? How do I start the search for someone who understands what I am going through and can relate to the pain and suffering that drug use has caused mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually? This is a good question and one that is asked frequently by those afflicted with addiction. You want to choose a counselor that has a history of treating people who have a mind that is wired differently than others. Your feeling tremendous shame, guilt, remorse and feelings of hopelessness. You use because you can’t stop once you start. Despite the destruction to yourself and those that care about you it seems that each day no matter how hard you try you end up right where you left off.

What To Expect

Upon entering counseling you will be asked several questions to help assess the severity of the problem.
Some of the questions will be the following:

  • Length of time you have used alcohol or drugs
  • What other family members have an addictive history of use?
  • What occurred the last time you used?
  • Can you identify the emotions that you are numbing out from when you use?
  • When did you start using and when did it seem to get out of control?
  • What was you life like before drugs took over?
  • What effects has your use had on those close to you?
  • Are you ready to stop your use or are you just flirting with the idea?

Goals of Therapy

The goals are set once you start treatment. The most optimal is for you to stop use for good. This is easier said than done. Many may need inpatient help or an outpatient level of care. This allows for a very structured format in which you are provided several hours a week to focus solely on getting better. After many have attended inpatient treatment they maintain seeing a therapist weekly or twice weekly depending on the need. This is where my services come into play. I see clients individually, in family sessions and often with their partners. This is not a one stop one size fits all solution. Each person is unique and together in a collaborative effort your treatment and therapy is designed for you specifically.

Treating the mental health and emotional issues is primary. Some of the following you may be dealing with are:

  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Resentment
  • Loneliness
  • Isolation
  • Anxiety
  • Helplessness
  • Depression
