Which Side Is The Family On?

Drug Addiction Orlando

Drug addiction Orlando and drugs are winning the lives of our youth and adult children. Parents are sure making it easy for their teen or adult child to fall to the powerful effects that destroy lives. Drugs will rip your family apart. Worse are the contributors that enable the behavior to continue.

Will For Certain Do The Following:

  • Steal all of the family money, time and resources.
  • Cause endless amounts of stress, guilt, fear and pain.
  • Always seek to destroy lives and bring the inevitable death to the person using.
  • Always get worse and never better unless met with a strong enough force. An addict must hit a bottom before death knocks at their door.
  • Will seek to make the other members of the family feel guilty and blame themselves. This leads to waves of emotional turmoil so you become ineffective to do anything to assist in creating the necessary bottom.
  • You will get lied to, cheated, manipulated and conned. An addict will do anything in order to keep using.

Sounds fun doesn’t it? Well as a drug counselor and a women in recovery from drug addiction, I can safely say that I once found therapy with for addiction I was set free. In order for treatment to be effective, the family must unite together and send a strong message to the addict. The message that no longer will it have control over their life and the lives of those around them. It’s important to note that there are two split persons when addiction has its grips in the person. There is the addict and then there is the true self. The son, daughter, husband, wife, etc that you know does not act out in the above stated ways.

Stop the Enabling

Therapy has become so ineffective now that I rarely will keep a client if they are coming in because they want to keep the behavior going and seek to please the family members. The family does not allow me the flexibility to move around freely. They call to check up on their adult child. They tell me to “not lose his or her trust above all else”. I am astonished by the comments I hear today by parents. The parents are so afraid and operating out of a selfish place. Helicopter parenting is in full effect. They do not want me to lose the trust of an addict! Wow that tells it all. Do not upset my 30 year old son, he may leave and then we as parents will feel its our fault. Don’t be to firm with the addict. He may flare up and run away. This is the attitude of most parents today.

The parents have no awareness and are riddled with guilt and embarrassment.

“Drug addiction is about saving lives not concerning ourselves with the addict trusting us or not.”

Attempting to bail your adult child out of trouble leads quickly to making the addiction grow and does nothing to help. Parents either need to understand the approaches to drug therapy. They tare shown to work time and time again. If your unwilling to allow the therapist to do the work then save your money. Your only going to sabotage the process.

It is more important that parents be liked and needed than to set a firm boundary and create an alliance. Setting boundaries with an addict is the best thing to show support.

Seeking Support and Help for
Drug Addiction Orlando and the Family

As the family members understand and learn about addiction, they come to see how enabling and counterproductive it is. They will learn to watch the addicted members behavior and not have a knee jerk reaction to rush in and rescue.

The biggest gift you can give to your loved one that is suffering from drug addiction is support in the form of setting boundaries. Seeking a sober coach, counseling for yourself and the family is extremely beneficial. It’s time to focus back on yourself and not solely on the addict.

It’s time to return back to yourself. This behavior will not be tolerated. Your family and you are worth it. Help save the life of the addict and not support the addiction to continue.
