Find Your Flow

Relationship Counselling Orlando

Relationship counselling Orlando and how to have a relationship that flows with ease. Relationships do require work and will face tough challenges both large and small. Everyday stress tends to creep into the relationship and can quickly be a threat to your partnership. If both are willing to look at the role they play and come up with solutions instead of blaming, then the relationship can get back on track.

There are several factors that can lead to stress:

  • Career
  • Finances
  • Children
  • Extended Family
  • Mental health issues
  • Illness
  • Move or relocation

Stress and the impact on the relationship

When stress is on the relationship it not only affects one person but directly affects both. Couples tend to resort to conditioned responses and actions that were instilled at childhood. Your partner may be a runner or avoid stress by shutting down. Others may misplace blame on the other due to unawareness of what emotions they are feeling. The other person often absorbs the stress and makes attempts to fix or soothe their partner. This only leads to confusion, resentment, anger and a feeling that you must be the source of that stress.

You may find yourself being yelled at for no good reason only later to find out that your partner is under tremendous stress at work. This misplaced anger compounds and leads to anger quickly. Aside from stress one or both may become depressed. Each are trying to fix one another and get the other to “listen or understand their side of the story”. Why do we take it personal when our partner has a bad day? Can we continue to be in a relationship and remain happy despite the emotional state our partner is in.

Approaches

Many approaches to therapy can be utilized. Cognitive behavioral and narrative are two approaches I use often. When a person can see the story or narrative they are making up about a situation, they see that it was an assumption and not the reality. Both Individual and couples counseling are utilized depending on the need. If one partner is stuck and unable to work through an issue from childhood then I recommend an individual session. It is often hard to do the work you need to do with your partner sitting next to you. Family therapy is also useful to include the children and help to align the family as a whole.
